How it works

Drink to the work and the heat, not to thirst — thirst means you are already behind. Replacement runs from about ½ quart per hour for light work up to 1 quart per hour for hard work in extreme heat. Never exceed 1.5 quarts per hour or 12 quarts per day; overdrinking can wash the salt from your blood and cause a medical emergency.
